How Do Dental Implants Work?

zirconia dental implant and crown

Dental implants are made of titanium or zirconia. They are surgically implanted in the jawbone to replace missing tooth roots. Once they have fused with the jaw in a process called osseointegration, they can provide unrivaled support for restorations like crownsbridges, and dentures.

This is the only treatment in dentistry that can replace natural teeth from root to crown. Implants are also the only treatment that can prevent jawbone atrophy. After tooth loss, the underlying jawbone loses the stimulation the tooth roots once provided. It can begin to wither quickly, leading to a range of dental health issues. Because implants anchor in the jaw, they can provide the stimulation needed to keep the bone healthy and strong.

Zirconia and titanium dental implants are durable enough to last a lifetime, and the restorations they support can last you decades. Our dentures, crowns, and bridges are custom-made and precisely tailored for the shape, shade, and size that's best for your bite and smile. Choosing to restore your teeth with dental implants can truly change your life.

Numbing Anesthetic

Dental implant placement isn't particularly painful. In fact, it can usually be performed with just local anesthetic.

Implant Placement

Your dentist will make a small incision in your gums to access your jawbone. They'll place your titanium or zirconia implants at strategically chosen points to provide your restorations with the best stability and the most natural look in your mouth.

First Healing Period

It will take around four to six months for your implants to fully fuse with your jawbone.

Abutment Placement

Once you've healed from implant placement, return to our Thomasville office so your dentist can attach abutments to your implants. These small pieces lock implants and restorations together.

Second Healing Period

It only takes about two weeks to heal after abutment placement.

Restoration Placement

Visit us for one last appointment so your dentist can attach your custom restorations to your implants. They'll ensure a comfortable fit and lifelike look before firmly securing them in place.
